Kim was born on December 8, 1953, in Athens, Georgia, the third of five children of Ann Lee and Donald Wade Basinger, who were both entertainers in their day. Ann was a model, dancer, actress, and swimmer who appeared in many films at the time, while her husband Donald was a musician, credit manager, and former US soldier. Kim Basinger has two brothers, James Michael and Skip, and two sisters, Ashley and Barbara. Her ancestry includes a mixture of English, German, Swedish, and Scottish Irish.
Kim, who described herself as an extremely shy child and young adult, studied ballet from her tender age of three until the middle of her teens when she became less shy and more confident.
