His professional career began right after high school, where he played various sports such as basketball, soccer, and athletics.

During his high school soccer career, Suh was a reciprocal linesman for the school soccer team. As a junior, he earned an honorable mention in the All-State Selection and an award in the All-Pil First Team. In his senior year, he won the Interscholastic League Defensive Player of the Year award and was named to the All-State Class 4A First and High School All-American team by Parade Magazine. He completed his college football career at the University of Nebraska where he played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. From 2005 on, he played the role of defensive tackle for the team and ended in 2009. As a rookie, Suh played only the first two games for the Cornhuskers before being suspended for the rest of the season after knee surgery.

The following year, Suh played all 14 games for the Cornhuskers as a defensive substitute and took 19 tackles. In the same year, he received the All-Big-12 awards from The Sporting News.
