Kyle Kuzma was born on July 24, 1995, in Burton, Michigan, and received the full name, Kyle Alexander Kuzma. He is of mixed race and has American citizenship, as his biological father is of African-American descent, while his mother traces her ancestry to Ukraine, England, and Germany. Kuzma gave up his last year to qualify for college and participated in the 2017 NBA Draft, becoming the 27th player to trade in the 2017 NBA Draft. He was traded in the draft-night trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for D’Angelo Russell, who went from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Brooklyn Nets and then later, on July 3, 2017, signed a contract with the rookie scale Lakers.
After his rookie season, Kyle was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He played in seven of eight games for the Los Angeles Lakers and also started in six of the games that were part of the NBA Summer League, leading the team in terms of points scored and becoming a consistent presence in the future.
Kyle Kuzma was appointed to the second team in the All-Summer League after averaging 21.9 points per game, 6.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.1 steals. After a 110-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in the championship game, he was also named MVP of the Summer League championship game after scoring a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds.
