The highly talented actress was born on June 23, 1957, as Cynthia Ann Smith in Gibson City, Illinois, in the United States. When she was one and a half years old, she was adopted by a couple from Canada named Noreen E. and Vernon McDormand.

Noreen worked both as a nurse and as a receptionist, and her husband Vernon McDormand is a pastor at the Disciples of Christ Church. Because of their childless marriage, the couple decided to adopt Frances and her sister Dorothy. Dorothy is an ordained pastor in the Disciples of Christ Church, while Frances pursued an acting career.

While growing up, Frances attended Monessen High School and graduated in 1975. After graduating, she enrolled at Bethany College in West Virginia, where she received a bachelor’s degree in drama in 1979. Frances also attended the Yale School of Drama, where she earned a master’s degree in fine arts.

After graduation, Frances McDormand moved to New York together with her friend Holly Hunter where she started her professional acting career. Holly introduced her to the Coen brothers Ethan Coen and Joe Coen with whom she got married later. Frances began working with the brothers when she first appeared in Derek Walcott’s play Trinidad and Tobago in 1982. She later made her first film appearance in 1984 when she appeared in a film called Blood Sample, which was shot and produced by the Coen brothers.

Since the beginning of her acting career, Frances McDormand has appeared in several films produced by the Coen brothers, including a comedy called Raising Arizona, in which she starred alongside Nicolas Cage. Frances McDormand gained fame when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1998 after her brilliant role in a civil rights drama entitled Mississippi Burning. Later that year, she was also nominated for a Tony Award for her role in a Broadway drama entitled Desire.

The versatile actress triumphed, however, when she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her 1996 role in Fargo. In 1994, the power couple adopted a son named Pedro McDormand Coen from Paraguay, and they have all lived happily ever since in their New York City residence. They also have a home in Western Marin County, California.

In addition, Pedro grew up and although he is surrounded by Hollywood stars, he has taken a different career path. He currently works as a personal trainer and a certified massage therapist.
