The American multi-talented stand-up comedian, actor, and author, whose unique style of comedy is conveyed through social commentary and personal insights, is best known for creating and playing the lead role in the semi-biographical sitcom entitled The Carmichael Show.
Jerrod Carmichael Bio
Jerrod Carmichael was born on June 22, 1987, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was raised by his parents along with an older brother, Joe Carmichael Jr., in the Morningside section of the city. His mother, Cynthia, worked as a secretary, while his father, Joe Carmichael Sr.
Carmichael attended Robert B. Glenn High School, which he graduated from in 2005. During his school years, he began to refine his comedy craft and learn how to speak in public. In fifth grade, he was able to host a morning news show on the local access channel of his elementary school.
In 2008, several years after graduating high school at the age of 20, Jerrod moved to Los Angeles to begin his acting and comedy career. There he tried his hand at stand-up comedy before he had ever tried it. Since he grew up poor, Carmichael often used it as a theme in his stand-up comedy. His first show was an open mic night at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood. For a few years, he worked his way through many other clubs before he performed and performed at the “New Faces” showcase at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival in 2011.

In 2014, Carmichael got his breakout role and appeared opposite Seth Rogan and Zac Efron as a Delta Psi Beta member in the comedy Neighbours. That same year, he appeared on the television show The Goodwin Games before Spike Lee came on board to direct his HBO special Jerrod Carmichael: Love at the Store, which was filmed at the Comedy Store.
In 2015 Jerrod Carmichael immersed himself in television production as he wrote and starred in his own sitcom on NBC called The Carmichael Show. The sitcom followed a fictional version of Carmichael and his immediate family members, addressing social issues, mostly about black people, and other current events from a comedic perspective. The show included fictional portrayals of his father Joe, played by David Alan Grier, his mother Cynthia, played by Loretta Devine, and his brother Bobby, played by actress and comedian Lil Rey Howery. Other characters are Jerrod Carmichael’s girlfriend who became his wife, Maxine, played by Amber Stevens West, and Bobby’s estranged wife Nekeisha, played by Tiffany Haddish.
The show received rave reviews and was praised for pushing the boundaries of what was possible during its three seasons of political and racist themes. The show ended in June 2017, after Carmichael announced that he wanted to devote himself to other projects. It is unclear what exactly these other projects are, but Jerrod had released a second HBO special called Jerrod Carmichael: 8 during the broadcast of the show’s third season on March 11, 2017. This was filmed in the Grand Hall of the New York Masonic Hall under the direction of comedian Bo Burnham.
