The Welsh actor Matthew Rhys fell in love with acting at the age of 17 after his role as Elvis Presley in a school musical. Afterward, he applied for a study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and was accepted. It was not long before he was awarded the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship in 1993.

He was born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of father Glyn, a headmaster, and mother Helen Evans, a teacher.
